…To Gertwiller – the capital of gingerbread 🍪
Gertwiller is a small village with a long tradition of wine-making. Surrounded by vineyards, it does not hold large Christmas markets. If you are planning a tour of Alsace, it may be worth a visit on your way to the popular Christmas market in Obernai and near the charming village of Barr.

So why visit it on a Christmas tour of Alsace? Because here you can buy gingerbread and Alsatian biscuits in all shapes and sizes in the village’s two century-old shops: the Musée du Pain d’Épices and the Palais du Pain d’Épices, a boutique belonging to the popular French brand Fortwenger.
Both buildings are every child’s sweet dream (and the one we carry inside us). Admission to the Musée du Pain d’Épices is included with the Alsace Pass. It has a small shop selling all kinds of sweets and a museum dedicated to this product, which has a special tradition in Alsace.
At the entrance to the village, the giant Mannele of the Palais du Pain d’Épices makes it clear that everything here is on a grand scale. Inside, you’ll enjoy yourself like a child in a sweet shop with the full range of biscuits and gingerbread in all shapes and sizes.
