There are many cities and towns in the former Soviet Union that were once thriving and promising settlements, but have now become silent monuments to the past (not to mention the countless abandoned villages and hamlets). These places, abandoned by people, have become so-called ‘ghost towns’ — eerie, frightening locations that are amazingly suitable for filming horror movies and post-apocalyptic stories.

The depopulation of these settlements is due to various reasons: natural disasters, man-made accidents, wars or economic decline. Today, I will tell you about five of the most famous ghost towns of the USSR, in their current state, will forever remain in people’s memories as symbols of a lost era and lost power.

  • 1. Pripyat: a city frozen in time
  • 2. Neftegorsk: a city destroyed by an earthquake
  • 3. Promyshlenny: a settlement buried underground
  • 4. Kadykchan: ‘Valley of Death’ on the Kolyma
  • 5. Agdam: a city destroyed by war

1. Pripyat: a city frozen in time

Founded in 1970, Pripyat was one of the youngest and most modern cities in the USSR. It was home to about 50,000 people, most of whom worked at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.

This ‘advanced’ city was equipped with everything necessary: schools, hospitals, parks, a palace of culture, and even its own Ferris wheel, which is quite unusual for settlements with such a small population.

Everything changed overnight on 26 April 1986, when the well-known disaster at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant occurred. The reactor explosion led to the release of a huge amount of radiation. The residents of Pripyat were evacuated in just three hours. But the consequences of this disaster are still visible and felt in the deadly background radiation.

Today, the once advanced and prosperous city remains an exclusion zone, where only stalkers and former residents return to visit protected areas and honour the memory of those who died.

2. Neftegorsk: a city destroyed by an earthquake

Neftegorsk, located in northern Sakhalin, was founded in 1962 as a settlement for oil workers. By the 1970s, it had become one of the most well-developed settlements in the region. It had kindergartens, a school, shops and all the necessary infrastructure for a comfortable life. However, Neftegorsk’s fate turned out to be tragic.

On the night of 28 May 1995, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 struck. The underground tremors destroyed almost all of the city’s buildings. 2,040 people were killed under the rubble, accounting for more than 60% of the population. Rescuers worked around the clock, but many survivors lost their families and loved ones.

The town was completely destroyed and was not rebuilt. Today, there is practically nothing left of Neftegorsk – only a memorial and a chapel in memory of those who perished.

3. Promyshlenny: a settlement buried underground

The mining settlement of Promyshlenny, once located in the Komi Republic, was founded in 1956 near two mines – Promyshlennaya and Tsentralnaya. In the 1970s, more than 13,000 people lived here.

Like all the examples above, the settlement had everything necessary for a comfortable life (even a restaurant). However, by the end of the 1980s, decline set in – miners went on strike because of harsh working conditions and delayed wages.

Despite everything, the settlement survived the crisis. I don’t know if it was for better or for worse, because on 18 January 1998, a methane explosion occurred at the Central Mine, killing 49 people. After this tragedy, both mines that had been the backbone of the town were closed, and the settlement began to rapidly empty.

By 2007, Promyshlenny was completely deserted — the last residents had left. Today, this place reminds us how quickly a thriving city can turn into ruins.

4. Kadykchan: ‘Valley of Death’ on the Kolyma

Kadykchan, which translates from Evenki as ‘Valley of Death’. And how accurately the name corresponded to the content – the settlement was founded in 1943 in the Magadan region and during the Great Patriotic War, among other things, a Gulag camp was located here.

After the end of the Great Patriotic War and the subsequent disbandment of the camp, coal mining, which had been started by the convicts, continued here. And it was precisely as a mining settlement that this settlement existed almost until the change of eras in our country – by 1989, more than 6,000 people lived on its territory.

Under Soviet rule, a hospital, school, cinema and even a cultural centre were built in Kadykchan. In other words, everything that constituted the unshakeable foundation of any more or less large settlement of that time.

The settlement managed to survive the dark times of Perestroika and the early 1990s. However, in 1996, a gas explosion occurred at the mine, killing six miners. The mine was mothballed as an emergency facility, and residents began to be resettled to other cities.

By 2010, Kadykchan had been completely deserted. Today, it is just another ghost town, where only dilapidated buildings and painful memories of the past remain.

5. Agdam: a city destroyed by war

Agdam, located in Nagorno-Karabakh, was founded in the 18th century and had a long and extremely eventful history. It is known that by the end of the Soviet Union’s existence, in 1989, 28,000 people lived here, which is quite a lot by the standards of this region.

Agdam - one of the most famous ghost towns of the USSR
Agdam – a picturesque city, but devastated by war.

The city was famous for its winery, bread museum and theatre. However, in 1991, after the Soviet flag was lowered over the Kremlin, a bloody conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan for control of Nagorno-Karabakh began almost instantly in historical terms.

Agdam was extremely unlucky – it found itself at the very epicentre of the fighting.

For some time, the city held out. But in 1993, the settlement was almost completely destroyed by incessant artillery shelling. Symbolically, only the mosque, built in 1870, survived.

By 2010, despite the fact that the conflict was a thing of the past and was only slowly smouldering in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, less than 360 residents remained in Agdam. But later, due to a new escalation, they left the city. Therefore, today, compared to other cities on the list, Agdam is the most terrible symbol, as it reflects the destructive power of war – a man-made disaster caused by politicians, rather than the result of a man-made catastrophe or the ravages of nature.

Ghost towns are not just abandoned places on a map. They are a reminder of how quickly life can change under the influence of natural, man-made or social disasters.

Even in the modern world, these famous ghost towns of the USSR are still of great significance — they have become symbols of lost hopes and unfulfilled dreams. They are also a silent reminder of the power of nature and of man, who can sow the wind and reap the whirlwind.
