Sometimes the most incredible treasures are hidden right under our noses. Today we will share with you not just a list of places, but real portals to the past that you will definitely not find in standard tourist brochures. These ancient fortresses in Georgia are not just piles of stones, believe me. Each of them breathes history, is steeped in the winds of centuries, whispers legends and preserves the echoes of past battles.

Ananuri: Behind the beautiful picture lies a whole drama!

  • Ad: 5P73+G5H, Ananuri, Georgia. About 45 mi (72 km) from Tbilisi.
  • Opening: 9 am – 8 pm

You’ve probably seen photos of the picturesque Zhinvali Reservoir with a church and fortress wall in the background. That’s Ananuri. No doubt about it, it’s a sight to behold. But most people take a couple of photos and move on. And that’s a shame!

Ananuri Fortress is one of the country's most important sights and the most photographed monument in Georgia.

Behind those walls, serious passions were raging! In the 17th century, princes fought for power, plotted intrigues, and staged battles there… Every tower, every stone is a witness to those times. When the wind whistles through the battlements, it seems as if the shadow of some ancient warrior is about to emerge from around the corner.

They say that the untold riches of the Eristavi clan are buried here. Of course, no one has found the treasure yet, but the very idea that you are wandering around a place where treasures once may have been is intriguing.

Khertvisi: Guardian of two rivers with a thousand years of history

  • Ad: Khertvisi-Vardzia-Mirashkhani, Georgia
  • Opening: 10 am – 6 pm

If Ananuri is all about beauty and intrigue, then Khertvisi is pure power and strategic importance. This fortress, which stands proudly on a rock at the confluence of the Mtkvari and Paravani rivers, has seen more than we could ever imagine!

Khertvisi is one of the oldest fortresses in Georgia.

Just think about it: the first mentions of it date back to the second century BC! Can you imagine how many eras have passed these walls, how many armies have tried to take them? You can really feel the breath of the Great Silk Road here, as the fortress controlled important trade routes.

Time seems to stand still here. They also say that you can dig up all sorts of antiquities in the vicinity of Khertvisi — shards, coins… Maybe you’ll be the lucky one?

Rukhi Fortress: An Unfinished Song in Stone

The renowned Georgian historian Vakhushti Bagrationi confirmed that it was Levan Dadiani who initiated the construction of the Rukhi Fortress in 1647. Although only ruins remain today, one can still sense its former grandeur and purpose. Imagine what it could have been like if it had been completed!

This is a place for those who can see beauty in decay, who can complete the picture in their imagination.

Gori Fortress (Goristsikhe): A bird’s-eye view

  • Ad: 10 Besarion Jughashvili St, Gori, Georgia

And finally, Goristsikhe, a fortress that stands proudly above the town of Gori. It can be seen from afar, inviting you to climb to the top and look down on everything from above.

The history of this fortress is so ancient that it takes your breath away. The first mentions of it date back to the first century BC! Can you imagine how many centuries it has watched over the life of the city, how much has happened at its foot?

Climbing Goristsikhe is certainly no walk in the park, but the view from the top… it’s simply out of this world! The whole city is at your fingertips, and in the distance you can see the snow-capped peaks of the Caucasus Mountains.

These are secret gems of Caucasus – ancient fortresses in Georgia. Each of these places is not just a point on the map, but a whole history waiting for you to discover.
