Stockholm’s big Christmas tree
Every Christmas in Stockholm, a 40-metre tall fir tree travels from the north of Sweden to Gamla Stan. Stockholm’s tallest Christmas tree is erected on Skeppsbrokajen, opposite the island of Skeppsholmen.
It is decorated with a 4-metre star on its top and more than 5000 light bulbs. You won’t be able to stop taking pictures!
Seeing the Christmas lights
Stockholm at Christmas time shines brightly every night. With 18 hours of darkness in the city during the month of December, many of the plans will be at night, so one of the best things to do is to enjoy the Christmas decorations.

40 streets and squares in the city are decorated with lights as part of the Stockholmsjul festival. We leave you this map with the route of lights in Stockholm at Christmas. All of them are beautiful but if you only have time to visit a few of them, don’t miss them: Brunkebergs Torg, Drottninggatan, Grev Turegatan and Nybroplan.
Get on the marzipan boat
Since the end of November, the Marsipanbaten docks at Strandvägskajen 18. It is known as the marzipan boat (Marsipanbåten i Stockholm) and is a tradition that has been going on for more than 20 years.

It is a floating bakery where you can buy marzipan, chocolates, jams, chocolates, chocolates, nougat… All the products are handmade and of high quality. They also offer tastings, so you can get your Christmas sweets and take them home with you.
Attending the St Lucia procession
a traditional Stockholm Christmas event
For four centuries, the St. Lucia procession, representing light and darkness, has been held in Stockholm every December 13.
Young girls dress up in white robes and wear a crown with candles, and children dress up as elves and sing carols.
The processions take place at night in the city’s main churches and one of the best can be seen in Adolf Fredriks Kyrka’s church.
Try Julbord, the Swedish Christmas buffet
If you like to sample a country’s cuisine and you’re travelling to Stockholm at Christmas, don’t hesitate to try the Julbord, or the Swedish Christmas buffet.
This is an open buffet that usually serves Julskinka (a kind of ham with mustard), marinated herring, salmon, lutfisk (marinated cod), sausages, köttbullar (meatballs), sausages, pâté, pâté, sausages, pâté, meatballs, sausages, pâté, pâté, pâté, pâté, pâté, pâté, pâté, pâté, pâté, pâté and more, sausages, pâté, Jansons Frestelse (baked cut potatoes with cream, cheese and spices), cabbage, pepparkakor (ginger biscuits), marzipan, glögg, schnapps (schnapps)…. So go hungry because it’s quite hearty.
During this time of the year it is very common for families and friends to have family and friends dinners and serve this ‘Christmas table’. But don’t worry if no Swede invites you to their house because you can try it in several restaurants in the city, such as Josefina, Stortorgskällaren, Långholmens Wärdshus, Villa Godthem…
Get in the mood, buy great gifts and let the magic light up the winter darkness. We wish you a wonderful day – and a Merry Christmas.
